DREAMING CLIMATE CONSCIOUSNESS

CALL FOR PLAYWRIGHTS!

We invite playwrights interested in speculative storytelling, climate futures, dynamic collaboration, and new modes of collective creation to apply for this paid opportunity!

APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN May 22 – June 26, 2026
Applicants will be selected by END of July 2026

THIS PROJECT IS A COLLABORATION BETWEEN DOWNSTAGE, IMMIGRANT COUNCIL FOR ARTS INNOVATION AND EVAN MEDD

Dreaming Climate Consciousness is an iterative, process-oriented creation process where participants work collaboratively to explore climate futurisms through the lens of speculative and science fiction. While deeply considering the ongoing and yet-to-be-seen progressions of climate change, the cohort will collectively build and populate a speculative world unique to their group — a shared landscape from which dynamic climate narratives emerge. Through this process, new community connections are generated and participants are provided with the opportunity to collectively and creatively navigate their eco-anxieties together.

Downstage Theatre, Immigrant Council for Arts Innovation, and Evan Medd, who created and facilitates the initiative, will be bringing together both established Calgary-based playwrights and Newcomer playwrights to collaboratively imagine and inhabit a co-created speculative world. Together, participants will develop the histories, tensions, and possibilities of a shared climate future, with each playwright ultimately creating an original short play set within the collective universe they build together.
