SEPTEMBER OFFERINGS

An Evening with Marie Beath Badian
Friday, September 25 at 7 PM
Motel Theatre, Werklund Centre | FREE
(please RSVP below!)

We are delighted to welcome renowned Canadian playwright Marie Beath Badian for a very special one-night-only event, presented by the Playwrights Guild of Canada and hosted by Downstage.

Marie Beath will read excerpts from three of her plays: The Making of St. Jerome, Prairie Nurse, and The Waltz. It’s such a great chance to experience glimpses of her sly, heartwarming, hilarious and political body of work.

Following the reading, join Marie Beath for a talkback facilitated by Downstage Artistic Director Clare Preuss. This is an opportunity to learn more about Marie Beath’s inspirations and creative process. It’s also a chance to catch these two long- time friends and collaborators together in conversation with the audience.

This reading event is made possible through the support of Playwrights Guild of Canada’s PlayConnect Program. Thanks to the team at PGC for this opportunity.

Space is limited! Admission is FREE and an RSVP is required so we can plan for numbers. Come spend an evening with one of Canada’s most exciting playwrights!

Kisapmata Book Launch with playwright Bianca Miranda
Friday, October 9
Doors at 6:30 PM / Reading by Bianca at 7:30 PM
Motel Theatre, Werklund Centre | FREE
(please RSVP below!)

Join us for the celebration of the publication of Kisapmata by Filipino-Canadian playwright and Downstage Artistic Producer, Bianca Miranda! After the world premiere in February 2024, co-produced by Chromatic Theatre and Lunchbox Theatre, Kisapmata was nominated for 5 Betty Mitchell Awards and won Outstanding New Play!

When two Filipinx women meet at work, sparks fly. A queer femme born in Canada and an enigmatic intern from the Philippines dive headfirst into a kilig-filled romance, knowing they have only sixty days before they must part forever. A love story to cherish for a lifetime, Kisapmata is a bittersweet, delightfully cheesy queer rom-com like an irresistible teleserye, celebrating queerness, Filipinx culture, and making the most of life’s blissful moments.

This gathering will include a reading of an excerpt from the play by Bianca, snacks from Amihan Grill, a scent sampling experience from Stop & Smell, and many more. Plus, get your copy for a discounted price!
